Reflections on Sport Relief Launch

Yesterday was a big day for me, and the rest of the Sport Relief team. Whenever we launch to a (relatively) unsuspecting public we are never 100% how people are going to react. I was on an early train to Norwich to help at one of our regional launches – it was a pleasure to meet Darren Huckerby, Jackson Williams and Danny Crates – I was particularly taken with Danny, a paralympic Gold medallist, who as well as helping in Norwich also helping in several other areas of the campaign. (I’ll let you know what when I am allowed to talk about it!).

On the train I was reading through some of the coverage our Media and Artist Liaison teams had managed to secure – James Cordon on the Chris Moyles show, Big Lol and Claudia on BBC Breakfast, Emma Bunton on the Alan Titchmarsh Show, Eddie on GMTV as well guests on Radio 2, Radio 4, Radio 5 and pretty much every regional TV and Radio station – it was (as always) a herculean effort. This is just the start though – a great campaign needs to produce strong Media opportunities throughout which, in this case, means another 8 1/2 weeks to go for them!

As for Norwich – we managed to get strong images for use in all the local print media, as well as live interviews for BBC Radio Norfolk (including one by me!) and some pieces to camera for use on Look East. A good days work by everyone there and one that will hopefully ensure success at The Norwich Mile – The City Council are working with us to organise it and it looks like it is going to be a brilliant day. Vicky and Helen from the events team there have been working really hard, and it shows.

Early indications for the campaign are very good – lots of hits to the website and a very strong first day of Mile entries – our daily campaign meeting later this morning will tell us more, but for now I am feeling hopeful of a good day.
